Below is an abridged text version of the video.
This is the second of two videos about Twitter search. The first is about the advanced search form on Twitter and does not need to be viewed with before this. If you’re not intimidated by using Twitter search “operators” – something that does sound a bit techy, then things become actually quite a bit easier on Twitter. You don’t need to go to the advanced search form. So here we have a regular Twitter search, and that’s gonna be a broad search. Doesn’t need to have any quotations, but once you put quotations here it has to appear in the same order. So we don’t want to get a result let’s say, which says “hour happy”. We want “happy hour”. Well, we should put the quotes there, and then we’ll be certain that we get exactly what we’re looking for.
Find Tweet trends, quick thoughts dashed off about esoteric subjects, sentiment on recent news about your company…the list goes on ad infinium . Results using operators let you stay “on page” and scan on topic shares from many people, rather than reading one person’s results in an article or post.
Here’s one that’s useful – of course if you want to use the hashtag because people are putting things in hashtag topics, you can use that and see everything that’s coming up there. You can use the From: and find out what is sent from a particular person. Same thing for the To: that’s sent to a person. Then if you don’t want to use the form and you want to get something from a geographical location you can simply do Near: and then the area. Of course New York is special, all you need is NYC. Other cities you could spell them out.
And if you want to be more specific, you could put Within: and then the distance from the center of the city. Just know that Twitter does not recognize with the Near: search operator for all of the smaller cities in the country, it’s mostly the larger ones. And it won’t recognize towns. That’s all, I’m Eric Van Buskirk with Tweet Philadelphia, and I hope that using Twitter advanced searches will make your tweeting experience a lot more productive.
